Neuchatel (5/5)

Switzerland is an expensive country, but every so often, little things come along that not only reduce the cost, but feel welcoming. The two-day tourist card that I received upon checking in at La Chaux de Fond is one of those. I used it yesterday for the watch museum, and today, I was able to travel by train to and from Neuchatel using that card. Yeah, I’m sure I’m paying for it in some other way – and I understand this is done to encourage tourism, which adds to the economy . . . but it feels nice!
Anyway, Neuchatel is on the shore of Lake Neuchatel and apparently, in La Belle Époque, it gave those who didn’t have the resources to go to the Alps, the ability to see the Alps – or mountains that could pass for the Alps – on the other side of the lake.  That idea was lost on me, but the lake is GORGEOUS!!!! I wandered down the hill from the train station, and around parts of the university built right on the lake. Then I sat for a while along the lake before wandering into Neuchatel and exploring the old town.  It’s really quite picturesque. My mind was on finding a chocolatier mentioned in my guidebook (talk about singleness of purpose!!!!) and I found it. Explaining what I wanted was fun. The guidebook had recommended chocolate with pumpkin seeds in it, and I tried to explain that to the clerk.  I could get the word for “seed” but not for pumpkin. She supplied “de Halloween,” we both laughed, and it was a done deal. Once supplied with chocolate, I climbed the hill to the church associated with the university – definitely worth it for both the building and the views, and while there, I also inspected the prison tower from the outside. (A fire had closed the tower – and views – to the public.)
I had decided to take a boat trip across the lake – again, paid for by my tourist card – and so I made my way back to the dock and took the boat.  There was a wedding party on board, with 3 little girls - 2 in pink and 1 in white – who could have been flower girls. The group got off at the first stop – I assume for a reception.  The boat made two stops and sailed in a giant triangle around the lake.  It was wonderful to see all the sailboats, and a few motorboats – one flying a kite behind it. After the exhilarating boat ride, I continued walking along the shore, people watching and soaking up the sun.  It was 65º but the sun made it seem hotter.  A few people were out in shorts and sleeveless tops, and I saw one bikini along the lake. Mostly, people were eating ice cream, riding bikes, strolling, or just sitting on benches. What a beautiful town!
Going back to the train station, I had to climb once again. I was wondering how people without as much stamina as I make it up the hill, but saw the taxi stop in front of the station, and also local buses.  Oh. Well, I earned my chocolate today. The train trip back to La Chaux de Fond was scenic and free. I rested and caught up on the Friday news shows before wandering out for a modest Chinese dinner.
